But before you go, I want to tell you
about my people. Some of us are
farmers. We grow different types of
food like tropical fruits, beans, and
plantains. Have you ever heard of
plantains? They look kind of like a
banana, but they aren’t sweet. Usually
people cook them before they eat them.

Anyways, we don’t
just grow food. Some
of us are 昀椀shermen. Other
people raise
animals, like
cows, sheep, and
goats. My dad works
with animals, and he lets
me help him. My favorite
time of year is when all the
baby animals are born!
As we work, we usually
speak our own language. It’s
called Zinza. But when we
talk to people from different
communities, we use Swahili.
93
That’s one of the languages that most
people in Tanzania speak. Swahili
is also the language that is used in
churches. When the pastor preaches,
he reads from the Bible in Swahili. We
all know how to talk
about everyday
things in
Swahili,
but we
don’t know
the language well
enough to talk about
God and Heaven. Things
like that are much
easier to understand in
our own language.
There are parts of the
Bible that were translated
into Zinza almost 100 years ago, but
cow
the alphabet they used is hard for us
to read. So now people are working on
making a new alphabet that is easier for
us to understand. And they’re starting
to translate the Bible too!
